We certainly appreciate some of the recent media attention to our cooperative movement. However, after reading some of the media articles, which seem to imply that our community-owned bar will be opening at the site, we feel the need to clarify the facts. The fact of the matter is that a developer owns the site, and ultimately will decide the future of that site. We, through the power of community and cooperative economics, merely hope to influence the future of that space for the betterment of the surrounding community. As we have stated elsewhere, our motivation is not just about a bar, but rather the formation of a cooperatively owned and managed establishment that strives to uphold values of democracy, equality, self-responsibility, solidarity, and the formation of a sense of pride and place in one’s community. This is a cooperative movement, not just a business.
